Affogato: Italy’s Simplest Dessert

As summer comes to a close, we are brewing our espresso at record pace. Our love of espresso grows as the days grow shorter, and we are enjoying it in one form that we just can’t get enough of…affogato! It’s perfect for a midday pick-me-up, or as a last minute dessert.

Affogato, gelato “drowned” in espresso, is a classic Italian dessert. The warm espresso mixes perfectly with the cold ice cream to bring a creamy, silky texture and bittersweet flavor. Affogato is both simple and delicious. The quality of this dessert ultimately depends on the espresso used to make it. We find that a rich espresso with a nice crema on top work best. As far as gelato goes, vanilla or hazelnut are the classic options. However, feel free to experiment with other flavors too! For an exciting after-dinner drink and dessert experience, add amaretto liquor!

Affogato

1 scoop of vanilla or hazelnut gelato (A scoop of your favorite ice cream will work just as well!)

1 shot of Caffe Geraci Espresso

1/2 ounce amaretto (optional)

Italian Biscotti

Scoop gelato into a bowl, glass, or coffee cup. Pour hot espresso directly over gelato. Enjoy immediately alongside your favorite Italian biscotti!

For Affogato Amaretto, mix together the amaretto and espresso before pouring over gelato.

I found it interesting when you mentioned that affogato perfectly mixes cold ice cream with warm espresso for a simple and delicious dessert. My friend is visiting next weekend, so I wanted to prepare snacks for us. I’ll keep this in mind and stop by an Italian bakery as well for some pastries. https://villabate.com/
